Marianna Bacellar-Galdino, DVM, PhD

Dr. Bacellar-Galdino is a Veterinary Ophthalmologist with significant experience in ophthalmology, clinical diagnosis, surgical techniques, and laboratory medicine. Marianna holds a Clinical Specialization and Master’s degree in Veterinary Ophthalmology and Surgery from the Federal University of Parana (UFPR), Brazil. She has also earned a PhD in Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology from Michigan State University (USA).

As a PhD candidate in the laboratory of Dr. Petersen-Jones, she worked on the discovery of various gene which cause retinal degenerations in dogs, cats, chickens and rodents. This work resulted in the development of experimental models which have been used for comparative research and the understanding of visual pathways as well as the optimization of gene therapies with the potential to treat these conditions in patients.

After the completion of her Ph.D in 2017, Dr. Bacellar-Galdino began to focus on drug discovery in ophthalmology. As a Senior Researcher at the contract research company Ophthy-DS Inc she applied her veterinary and research skills to help clients through the drug development process. She has significant experience with the evaluation of ocular toxicology, development of in vivo assays as well as in vivo models of ocular disease for drug testing. In 2020, Marianna joined Experimentica team following the acquisition of Ophthy-DS. In 2022 she was promoted to Directory of Veterinary Ophthalmology. Marianna maintains academic ties as an Affiliate Research Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine, where she contributes her expertise to comparative biomedical research and graduate education.
