Purpose: A strong clinical association exists between acute and chronic alcohol consumption and incidence of ocular surface disease. The goal of this study was to investigate the toxicological and pathophysiological effects of alcohol consumption on the ocular surface in vitro and in vivo.

Topical porphyrin antioxidant alleviates allergic conjunctivitis in environmental toxin exposure to particulate matter

Purpose: Exposure to environmental toxin particulate matter (PM) is associated with the development of acute and chronic ocular surface disease, including allergic conjunctivitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate cytotoxicity and ocular surface pathology in response to PM exposure. We developed a novel preclinical PM-induced allergic conjunctivitis model in rabbits and evaluated the pharmacologic efficacy of an experimental topical porphyrin antioxidant, manganese (III) tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphyrin (Mn-TM-2-PyP) and lifitegrast (Xiidra®).
